Prelim Task - Magazine Cover Drafts

I like this design because the masthead covers the top of the magazine with the main image slightly overlapping it. The main image is quite central the the page which is an idea i'd like to follow through for the rest of my designs.
The main coverline stands independantly beside the the main image along with the sub coverlines on the opposite side in a smaller font.

This design is a little different as the masthead is aligned to the left of the page along with the main image. A sell line is added to the side of the masthead aswell. All the coverlines are placed to the right of the main image. I'm not sure about this because it might look a little too much like a list.

This is probably my favourite design mainly because of it's simplistic approach. The masthead overlaps the top of the main image which again is very central to the page. The main coverline stands large at the top of the main image, with the sub coverlines proceeding on the opposite side.

This is my first draft for the front cover. When entering a newsagents we are hurtled into a whole host of magazines ranging from different audiences and different styles, with this in mind I tried to base the layout of my magazine around what was the most popular, the big sellers, and also new innnovative designs.
On this layout the image is placed to the left yet the person is covering a slight part of the title, the idea of this was to give a bit of depth. The sell line of the magazine is also placed above the masthead. The main image is then surrounded amongst the main coverline and also sub-coverlines

From the idea of creating depth I then moved the main image into the centre making it slightly larger with no sell line. Again the main and sub-coverlines are surrounding the magazine, much the same as the magazines we see today. I have played with the idea of a kicker on the bottom of the mag, however this may only be useful for magazines that thick in size so that the reader can precisely find the article they are looking for. In this draft I have tried to be a bit more creative by using pretty much the same layout yet placing the masthead at the bottom of the cover. I soon realised that this idea would not be practical as the masthead's purpose is to stand out. This especially would not work amongst a rack of magazines, no-body would know what it is about! 

Finally I have created this cover whereby the masthead is towards the left of the header and the sell line is alongside it. The main image is placed on a cantered angle to create a 'fun' angle to it. The main coverline is then placed large beside the image to help make it stand out. The sub-coverlines are placed below the main image

Preliminary Task

Using DTP and an image manipulation program produce the front cover of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photo of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionly candidates must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP
